What is an eSIM card?

An eSIM is a SIM card that is embedded in a mobile device and can connect you to any operator offering eSIM services.
Furthermore, the e-SIM works the same way as a traditional SIM card, but you don’t need a physical SIM card to use it. It is actually pre-installed in the device and you can activate it by installing the “eSIM profile” of a new operator.
Actually, it is an evolution of the physical SIM card. More and more smartphones, tablets and laptops are equipped with an eSIM card.

How does eSIM work?

With an eSIM-compatible device, you can easily install an eSIM profile (provided by operators/carriers) to be able to buy an e-SIM data plan when you need it, on the go. Plus you can use multiple operators and subscribe simultaneously several data plans to suit your needs: when travelling, working from home or remotely…
For example: with Ubigi, you can save up to 90% on roaming costs in comparison to your usual carrier, in 190 destinations. We also offer one-off and recurring data plans as alternatives to bad quality or unsecure Wi-Fi.
The eSIM is sometimes called by its technical name, eUICC (Embedded Universal Circuit Card) or virtual SIM.
Good to know: eSIM plays a major role in the Internet of Things (IoT) as the technology is already embedded in cars, wearables, home appliances, industrial machines…

How secure is an eSIM?

Security has become important more than ever and that is why it has become a priority for carriers. Like physical SIM cards, eSIM such as Ubigi eSIM provide the most secure and private ways to connect to the Internet.

Security standards on cellular networks are much higher than those of the public Wi-Fi networks that you can find in airports, hotels or cafés. 3G and 4G connectivity make data theft nearly impossible thanks to:

  • Private access
  • Private network
  • End-to-end control of your data
  • Encryption
  • Authentication
